The composer and instrumentalist Leopold Hurt (born 1979 in Regensburg) studied at the Richard-Strauss-Conservatory Munich (zither with Georg Glasl, viola da gamba and historically informed performance with Hartwig Groth and Michael Eberth). He received his first composition lessons from Peter Kiesewetter. In 2004 he continued his studies in composition with Manfred Stahnke at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg. He participated in master classes with Dieter Schnebel, Paul-Heinz Dittrich, Brian Ferneyhough (composition), and Nigel North (Early Music). Beside that he attended courses in electronic music at the IRCAM in Paris.

Leopold Hurt most recently draw attention with the music theater "Medea" (text by Christa Wolf). A number of works reflects his engagement with historical sound documents of traditional folk music, also with electronics and multimedia. His compositions were performed by noted ensembles like the Ensemble Modern, the Ensemble Intégrales, the Austrian Ensemble for New Music and the Munich Chamber Orchestra.

As a musician he performed with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the WDR Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra di Roma. In addition to that, he also works as a conductor and contributes in many ways to integrate the zither in the current music scene. One result of this is the cooperation with the DJ duo Gebrüder Teichmann (Berlin). On behalf of the Goethe-Institute concert tours took him repeatedly to China and to the Lebanon.
